Joke turns into a community fundraiser
By Mike Banovac {Star News}
It started out as a joke, but ended up raising close to $1,000 for the Northumberland Hills Hospital Foundation.
Tuesday, Victorian Horse Parade announcer, Mike VanKoughnett, was challenged to race a horse down Third Street.
VanKoughnett, who had earlier remarked to the crowd, “I can outrun that horse,” was presented with the challenge by parade organizer Nancy Easton and Third Street owner Barry Martin.
The horse, “Milly,” and VanKoughnett lined up on Third Street as the crowd began gathering pledges. Money raised from the pledges would go to the hospital foundation.
“When I went to get my coffee for a pre-race beer, ‘Milly’ had already gotten a half length on me,” said VanKoughnett with a laugh. “But I held my own and finished strong.”
The crowd roared as VanKoughnett made his way down the street, keeping close behind the horse. “It was a lot of fun,” he added. “It turned into something wonderful for the community, and we’re proud that the money will support the new hospital.” In all, the event raised $940 for the foundation. “Milly,” a six-year-old mare, was provided for the race by Shauna Flood Best of Northumberland Veterinary Services. The Third Street Charity Race was one of many fun activities held in conjunction with the Cobourg Victorian Christmas..
